Hankkija collaborates with Improvin’ to support Finnish farmers in the green transition.

Hankkija, Finland’s largest agricultural and machinery trade company, is proud to announce the collaboration with the climate technology company Improvin’. The initiative enables Hankkija to utilize on-farm primary data to measure value chain emissions and support farmers in reducing their environmental footprint.

Hankkija is launching a collaboration with the Swedish technology company Improvin’. Starting with the harvest of 2024, Hankkija will implement Improvin’s Sustainability Operating System into their sourcing operations to collect and leverage on-farm sustainability data. In the first phase, the new system will be available to Hankkija’s contract farmers.

The system helps Hankkija understand which farming practices impact their CO2 footprint and enables them to support Finnish farmers to transition to more sustainable methods.

The primary production of the ingredients that Hankkija sources, such as cereals and legumes, forms a significant part of Hankkija’s environmental footprint. However, working with farmers to collect the needed data to reduce the footprint has been an operational challenge.

“To drive any kind of impact, we need primary data from the farms. As does everyone else: everyone’s asking the farmers for more data. For this reason, we prioritized a solution that helps us obtain the necessary information without burdening the farmers - and one that provides value for them in return.”

Lumi Parviainen, Sustainability Manager at Hankkija.

With almost 120 years of history and a comprehensive range of agricultural offerings, Hankkija has long-standing relationships with thousands of Finnish farmers.

“We want what’s best for our farmers. Emissions are one thing, but ensuring farm resilience and future prosperity are equally important. We want to offer our farmers information, services and state-of-the-art technical tools, like Improvin’, that support them in the green transition,” Lumi continues.

Commitment to sustainability.

Hankkija has promoted regenerative agriculture and sustainable farming practices for many years. Today, these values have become key differentiators.

“The market is evolving. Value chain transparency and sustainability, once considered optional, are now must-have metrics we want to provide to our commercial partners”

Tarmo Kajander, Director of Feed and Raw Materials at Hankkija.

The implementation of the new system marks a significant milestone in Hankkija’s dedication to sustainability. However, the company flags that achieving long-term impact requires collaboration.

“Enabling the green transition in the food and feed industry is a joint effort involving the whole value chain. We’re in this together.”, Lumi concludes.

Niklas Wallsargård, the CEO of Improvin’, states: “We are humbled by Hankkija’s commitment and looking forward to kick-starting our collaboration across the Hankkija organization, providing value to thousands of Finnish farmers. I’m confident that together we will pave the way for more sustainable food and feed production, hopefully inspiring many more in the industry to join.”
