Yara International, a global leader in crop nutrition, and Improvin’ have announced a strategic partnership in Europe to support agri-food companies in tracking and reducing their agricultural greenhouse gas emissions. The partnership begins with a pilot project for Absolut Vodka.

As part of the partnership, Yara will provide services and products, including Yara’s Climate Choice lower carbon footprint fertilizers produced using low-carbon or renewable ammonia.  Data will be integrated into Improvin’s digital platform so that agri-food companies can measure, understand and manage the environmental impact of farming practices, including fertilizer usage, and drive emission reductions in their value chains.

The first joint project will be carried out for Absolut Vodka. In this pilot, 80 Swedish farmers participating in Absolut's Wheat Sustainability Programme will use Improvin's platform to share insights from their digital zero-plots – a tool to help farmers estimate the base level of nitrogen before fertilization. Some of the farmers are currently using Yara's Climate Choice fertilizers.

Overall, the partnership will enable more streamlined and detailed quantification of the impact of sustainable agricultural practices, including zero-plots and lower-carbon fertilizer application.

“Improvin’ has built a great product for quantifying farm-level emissions that complements our offering. We see significant collaborative potential benefiting our shared base of customers. Together with Improvin’, we can bring more transparency to the impact of fertilizers at the farm level and empower our customers to drive impactful reductions.”

Hilde Bjerknes, SVP Farming Solutions Europe at Yara International.

Beyond the pilot project with Absolut Vodka, this partnership aims for a long-term impact, with plans to introduce the joint offering to key European agricultural markets.

“Integrating Yara’s expertise with our advanced technology sets a new standard in sustainable agriculture. This partnership will accelerate the optimization of fertilizer use and support agri-food companies across Europe in implementing robust sustainability strategies.”

Niklas Wallsargård, CEO and co-founder of Improvin’.

Improvin’ offers an AI-based platform that helps agri-food companies track and reduce agricultural emissions, including fertilizer usage. Built with user simplicity in mind, the platform provides farmers with a streamlined reporting process and valuable feedback.

By equipping farmers with the latest technology, agri-food companies can measure, report, and reduce their agricultural emissions across their value chains with farm-level detail, enabling them to meet their climate commitments and comply with sustainability regulations.

The partnership is primarily focused on measuring and mitigating Scope 3 emissions: indirect greenhouse gas emissions which occur throughout a company’s value chain, but that they don't directly control.

For agri-food companies, agricultural Scope 3 emissions typically account for most of their carbon footprint, making them critical to address to achieve sustainability goals. However, these emissions are also the most challenging to measure and reduce. This partnership helps agri-food companies drive meaningful Scope 3 reductions by using precise, granular farm-level data.

By combining Yara’s innovative products and precision agriculture tools with Improvin’s digital infrastructure, companies will be equipped with traceable, verifiable, and actionable emissions data and targeted recommendations for optimizing farming practices to implement impactful, farmer-centered decarbonization strategies.
